Dr. Limbertas KLIMKA
Ethnical Culture Care Council

Readers of the article are invited to a one day trip to
the highest place in Lithuania. The hill is in Medininkai Eminence, located over 28 km from Vilnius, in a 0,5 km distance from Juozapinė Hill. It has 293,842 m of height and is called by the name of Aukštėjas – the highest god of old Lithuanian belief, the creator of the universe, ruler of morality and justice. A traveler is recommended to take the book called “Jaunts across Lithuania starting from
Vilnius” written by Vladislovas Sirokomle (Liudvikas Kondratavicius, 1823-1862) and printed in two volumes in 1857 and 1860. One should realize what a long historical memory the rout contains. That is the trail of Lithuanians marching to fight their eastern neighbors and defend their homeland, as well as the way of enemy troops accessing the heart of Lithuania-capital Vilnius. The road has seen Moscow’s army marching in 1655, Swedish warriors in 1702, fights of J. Jasinskis’ rebels, the triumph ant the tragic winter retreat of Napoleon in 1812, and even tanks of General Cerniachovksi in the year 1944. The trip should not only reveal a vibrant history of the region, but also acquaint with some interesting heritage objects of national minorities. The possibilities for developing cultural tourism are enormous. One simply needs to start caring and packaging the material for Vilnius citizens and their guests.

Jurgita Verbickiene
The Centre for Studies of the Culture and History of East European Jews

In the autumn of 2004 The Centre for Studies of the
Culture and History of East European Jews started a succeeding project called “Map of Jews in the Baltic Region”. Among its aims are: studying the Jewish heritage and representing it in the society, making it accessible for scientific research, helping museologists to identify and describe objects. The program was started in Lithuania (in cooperation with Association of Lithuanian Museums, Kedainiai Area Museum and other local government museums) however, it is going to be expanded. The program is about to cover several countries (Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus), that had been in the cultural range and living environment of Litvaks. The successful development of the project should enable a realistic reconstruction of the
Jewish lifestyle view in Lithuania and neighbor countries and should enlarge the present base of knowledge and improve the quality of Jewish expositions in museums.

On 15-17 of September 2005 in Lithuanian Art Museum, Pranas Domšaitis Gallery during the 125th anniversary of birth of Pranas Domšaitis an international
conference “Artistic centers and societies of artists in the Middle-East Europe” was organized. The aim of the conference was to actualize Artistic centers and societies of Artists in the Middle-East Europe’s cultural history
and to evaluate it on future cultural life perspectives of the region. Artistic society of Nida is a unique example in Lithuanian history. From the end of 19th century small village of fishermen called Nida became the center of gathering and
rtistic activities of painters, writers, actors and musicians. The colony of painters in Nida was dispersed by the
Second World War. After regaining independence cultural history of the region is being discovered anew with the stress on its suitability for tourism development.

Lithuania Exposition

Vidas POŠKUS
National Museum of Lithuania, History Department

During the Museum’s of Antiques anniversary an exposition representing historical heritage of Early Lithuania was mounted. Early Lithuania was one the largest countries in the Middle and Eastern Europe. Within the period of its prosperity the state was located between West and East civilizations, what had put it in a position of a moderator in the dialogue of the two different worlds. Only some small pieces of the unique historical heritage can be found on the exposition of the state which reached its complete political failure by the end of 18th century. The Expositionwas divided into two large parts.
One part intends to represent Lithuania’s political development from its formation till failure in 1795. Another part involves ethno-confessional spectrum of the state. Eloquent
objects are being presented within logically and metaphorically linked groups. All the objects are taken from collections of National Museum of Lithuania. That is mainly medieval archeological, historical, iconographical material, numismatics and documents. The number of objects exceeds 900.

Irena SENULIENĖ,
Trakai History Museum

Trakai History Museum on 10 of June 2005 opened an exposition of Sacral art. The exposition is located in a newly restored Jacobin monastery chapel in the territory of Peninsula Castle. A variety of ecclesiastical dishes, reliquaries, monstrances and other material used for decoration of church and liturgical ceremonies stored in Museum’s collection became a base for the exposition. The oldest one among liturgical dishes is a cruet made by goldsmiths of Vilnius in 1633. Caspanca - an item of furniture from the Late Renaissance according to cognizance used to belong to bishop and has a great historical and artistic value. Decorations and its archaism indicate that the casapanca was made at the beginning of 16th century somewhere in Northern Italy. Alongside with liturgical dishes stamps of churches and monasteries are shown. The initiative of settling Jacobins in Trakai belongs to vaivada of Trakai Marcijonas Oginskis. In 1678 he was the one to decide transfering the Trakai Peninsula Castle to Jacobin monkhood.

Loreta KORDUŠIENĖ
Raseiniai Area History Museum

In Raseiniai Area History Museum was opened a new exposition called: “Raseiniai Region during the Period of Occupations”. A large hall of 53 square meters tries to astonish its visitors by unusual interior design. There are no cases, just immovable metal pieces of explosives, barbed wire and touchable faces of ghetto dwellers. Bilingual sign in German and Lithuanian announces “Jewish are not allowed…”; measure in textual information makes a visitor more avid interesting. A portrait of Hitler printed in children’s journal “Little Star” (“Zvaigzdute”) is hanged surprisingly low in together with the “Snow Queen”. Conscription papers, anti-Nazi declarations and proclamations become eloquent with wider explanations. Remains of destroyed buildings
give an impression of impermanence. German troops where changed by soldiers from the Red Army; their attack routs one can find in presented layouts, alongside with original scorched map of Europe. The sight is especially attracted with the heaviest book in the world – brassy one with the names of rewarded Lithuanian fighters among its pages.

exhibition of Russian samovars from the second half of 19th - the first half of 20 th century which belongs to the personal collection of Vilnius collector Vladimir Lipniagov. More that 30 samovars of different design and capacity has been put on demonstration. All of them were produced from various
copper alloys in Russian and Polish factories. Researchers link the appearance and wide spread of samovars in Russian domestic culture with the reforms of Peter the Great and the development of metal industry over Russia. In 1850 Tula alone had 28 independent factories able to produce more than 120 thousands of samovars per year. Russian samovars spread widely in 19th century Russian everyday life and where known because of their shapes and decorations. By gilding, silvering and decorating samovars with china, bone and wooden details craftsmen managed to create the real pieces of art.

The publication presents the archaeological findings of “Alka” Museum’s Department of Archaeology collected in Telšiai old-town area during the long-lasting archaeological excavations. Sparse archaeological findings like works from flint and stony hatchets that were found on the shores of the lake Mastis at the area of present town testifies rather early appearance of the first Neolithic people (4000 – 2000 BC). Various findings make it possible to imagine the domestic life of Telšiai people. Among them are: tools for crafts, partial remains of working tools, articles of constructional and interior ceramics, fragments of window glass, china and pottery. Most of findings date back to 16th – 20th centuries. The latter findings as well as many others mentioned in the article one is able to see in the “Alka” Museum’s exhibition called “The Old Telšiai: Lost in Centuries”.

Dalia JONYNAITĖ

Ukiyo-e was for the first time introduced to Europe
in 1862 during the World Exposition in London, later in Paris (1867 and 1883) and in Saint Petersburg (1897). Different generations and representatives of various artistic
trends were impressed by Japanese woodblock prints. Lots of western artists used to collect them and to be proud of
their collections. The wave of interest in different forms of eastern art arouse at the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries. It has not bypassed Lithuania. Many researchers of M.K. Čiurlionis’ art agree that the artist was interested and admired the art and philosophy of the Far East. Some artist’s works reveal pretty close connections with Ukiyo-e. This publication presents the life-story of the less known M. K. Čiurlionis fellow from the times of Warsaw Art School Ona Bagnickaitė and some studies on her collection of Japanese woodblock prints. Today 21 prints of the O.Bag-nickaitė collection are being stored in Šiauliai “Aušra” Museum, while three works of Suzuki Harunobu delights the visitor’s eye in B. Sruoga Memorial House-Museum.

Asta ALELIŪNAITĖ

At the beginning of February 2005 in Turin (Italy) proceeded and international conference called “The Importance of Narration in Museum. The New Education” which aimed to bring the notice of museologists to narration as a way of motivation for qualification refreshment. That is becoming more and more important when meeting the demands of contemporary museum’s visitors. Over 250 participants attended from 18 regions of Italy and 28 specialists came from Easter, Central and Western European countries. However, more important than the number was the age of participants. The larger half of attendants where students of cultural subjects and even people who have been successfully working in the field at the age of 30. It emerged that most of them where not just the stuff of museums but people working for organizations or in private companies providing various services for museums, for instance, in institutions of scientific research, various foundations, agencies of IT, translation, event organization or cultural tourism.

The publication presents the Museum of Cultures in
Helsinki. The Museum studies and represents the peoples and cultures of the world and records their cultural heritage. The museum houses the ethnographic collections and the Finno-Ugrian collections of the National Museum of Finland.
The exhibitions provide perspectives into both past and present events and the everyday life of peoples throughout the world. The permanent exhibition Fetched from afar tells about man’s curiosity about the new and unknown, travel, trade and trends of ideas of different eras, in other words, about the Finland’s contacts with the rest of the world. By telling stories about the ways of its collections appearing in Finland puts
the information of the collections in a wider cultural historical and international background. Apart from permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions are displayed. They provide alternative ways to review the events of the world and also to remind of the existence of small, nearly to extinct or pressed peoples and groups. For example, in The Land of the
Saame exhibition photographer Pekka Antikainen brings into focus the people and the nature of the North. The Museum of Cultures is situated right in the city center, in Tennispalatsi (Tennis Palace), which also houses the Tennis Palace Art Museum, the museum shop, several cafes and restaurants and a multiplex movie theatre Finnkino.
